The government appointed Institute for Economic and Community (LPEM) and the University of Indonesia Faculty of Engineering Cooperation Agency (LKFT UGM) to assess the increase in electricity tariffs from various aspects. The plan, the results of this study will be presented by the government to the House Energy Commission in December 2011.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jero Wacik, said the two institutions was assessed independently, so the study is expected to provide clarity of policy impact. "We gave this task to the two institutions," Jero said in Jakarta on Monday, November 21, 2011.
The government plans to increase electricity tariff (TDL) of 10 percent in 2012. That policy is a consequence of lower government subsidies of electricity from Rp65 trillion to Rp45 trillion in 2012. The increase will be done in April for all classes, except the customers 450 watts.
Planned increase in electricity tariffs was greeted pros and cons. Not only businessmen who claimed to suffer the impact of that policy, the politicians are ready to reject and also questioned the government's management of the electricity.
